LSU Collects Gym Honors

The honors keep piling up for LSU gym this season.

Alyona Shchennikova and Haleigh Bryant both earned SEC honors this week for their performances against Auburn.

Shchennikova was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week, after her debut in the all-around. She set a career high in three of four rotations, and of course posted her best all-around score. Her career highs included a 9.90 on vault, 9.875 on beam, and a 9.925 of floor.

Still, her 39.525 wasn’t enough to win the all-around title on Friday. That honor went to Haleigh Bryant, this week’s SEC Freshman of the Week. She scored at least a 9.90 on every rotation but the bars, and won the all-around title with 39.550.

This is the third time Bryant has been named Freshman of the Week by the SEC. I think we get the point. She’s the top freshman in the SEC, and she won the SEC Gymnast of the Week for her performance on the road against Arkansas.

LSU is going to need both of them at their peak this Friday, as the Tigers face #1 Florida in the PMAC at 6:15 on the SEC Network. It is the meet of the year, and a clash between the top two teams in the nation.
