USA Baseball announced Wednesday that LSU freshman outfielder Dylan Crews is one of 45 players on the 2021 Golden Spikes midseason watch list.
The Golden Spikes Award, now in its 43rd year of existence, is given out to the best amateur baseball player in the country.
Crews has been as good as advertised in his first two months as an LSU Tiger. He has a team-best .350 batting average and is tied with Gavin Dugas for the team lead in home runs with nine. Crews also has seven doubles, 18 RBIs and has drawn a team-leading 24 walks. He’s also shown to be a force in the running game, leading LSU with nine steals.
The semifinalists will be announced June 8 and three finalists will be selected on June 24, while the trophy will be awarded some time in July.
Crews and his teammates look to build off last weekend’s series victory over Kentucky as the Tigers host a top-10 South Carolina team beginning on Thursday. South Carolina has a Golden Spikes watchlist member of their own in first baseman Wes Clarke.
