LSU got some great news ahead of the weekend as five-star safety Jacoby Matthews committed to the Tigers 2022 recruiting class.

Matthews, out of Ponchatoula, is the No. 2 safety in the class and the No. 3 player in Louisiana behind fellow five-stars quarterback Walker Howard and offensive tackle Will Campbell. All three players are currently committed to LSU.
Standing at 6’2” and weighing 205, Matthews is built along the lines of Jacoby Stevens and could play either linebacker or safety once arriving on campus. Matthews also plays quarterback for the Green Wave but his future is on defense.
Matthews credits his relationship with the newly hired Mason Smith as a reason for his commitment. Smith, an LSU graduate, was serving as Mississippi State’s recruiting specialist but announced he was joining LSU earlier this morning.
“I think Mason Smith is a great guy,” Mathews said in an interview with 247Sports. “Me and Mason have the closest relationship out of every recruiter I’m close with. He recruits hard and is a hard working guy. This move definitely brought light to my eyes,” Mathews said. “The way he works stands out and works to get kids over and build relationships and become more of a big brother, that’s important.”
With Matthews on board, LSU keeps adding to a potentially great class. LSU’s class is No. 3 in the 247 composite behind only Georgia and Ohio State. The Tigers have 13 commits and four are in the top-100: Howard (20), Campbell (27), Matthews (30), and tight end Jake Johnson (77).
