LSU used an all-hands-on-deck approach for Monday afternoon’s game against Southern, using 16 players and eight pitchers in a 10-2 victory.
Dylan Crews and Tre Morgan led the Tigers in hitting with a pair of 2-for-4 nights. Crews picked up two RBI with a double and a home run while Morgan picked up a double.
No Tiger pitcher threw more than 1.2 innings, logged by starter Will Hellmers and Michael Fowler. Hellmers allowed two hits and two walks, but didn’t give up a run while Howler allowed two runs on one hit and a walk.
LSU opened the game with a run after Morgan led off the game with a double, scoring on another double from Gavin Dugas. The Tigers tacked on a second run in the next inning when Alex Milazzo hit a two-out triple to score Drew Bianco. Drew Bianco doubled LSU’s lead with a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning, scoring Giovanni DiGiacomo.
Southern cut the lead in half with two runs in the fifth inning when a walk and hit by pitch came around to score on a double to left center.
The Tigers responded it with four runs on three hits and an error in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 8-2. Morgan and Crews led off the inning with a single and a double, Morgan scoring on the double. Cade Doughty reached on a throwing error and DiGiacomo was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Jordan Thompson scored Crews with a sacrifice fly and Cade Beloso scored the rest with a single up the middle.
LSU picked up an insurance run in the sixth inning with a solo home run from Crews and in the seventh when Doughty led off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.
Javan Coleman, Ty Floyd, and Aaron George all logged scoreless innings for the Tigers, with the trio combining to allow no hits and no walks with five strikeouts.
LSU will be off until Thursday night when they open a crucial must-win series at Auburn. Game one is schedule for 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
