Senior defensive end Andre Anthony will miss the remainder of the 2021 football season with a knee injury head coach Ed Orgeron confirmed to reporters Monday.
“Andre has a season ending injury,” Orgeron said. “But he will be with us this year, and whatever the next step is from there, we will find out.”
Anthony went down with a non-contact injury midway through Saturday’s win over Central Michigan. He had already made a massive impact in the game with returning a fumble for a touchdown.
Anthony had also turned into LSU’s best pass rusher over the last two seasons. He led LSU in sacks last season with 5.5, and through nearly three games had 4.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.
While LSU loses Anthony they are expecting to have senior defensive end Ali Gaye back for Saturday’s SEC opener against Mississippi State (11 A.M., SEC Network), and this will allow sophomore end BJ Ojulari to see the field more. Ojulari was named the conference’s defensive linemen of the week after a 2.5 sack game against Central Michigan. Freshman defensive tackle Maason Smith also took reps on the outside against Central Michigan and backup players like Desmond Little and Jarrell Cherry both saw a small bit of playing time.
