2022 LSU football roster tracker

With all the roster turnover and transfer portal ins and outs, I've seen some commenters wondering where the roster stands for 2022, so I figured it would be good to do a FanPost here tracking and updating LSU's roster numbers for the upcoming season.

Good news: The raw numbers are not thin at all, certainly nowhere near as bad as we feared.
Bad news: Some specific positions (DB, TE) may be pretty light on experience/talented depth.

Here's where LSU stands as of July 21.

UPDATE: I also added a player's remaining years of eligibility in () behind their name. Remember, the COVID year doesn't count for college eligibility but a lot of these guys could still be NFL-eligible after this year.

The Breakdown

Okay, so here's what this means for LSU:

  • The position breakdown currently shows 77 players on scholarship for 2022.
  • 4 transfers have no new spot/can *technically* return (Smith, Moore, Strong, Skinner)
  • LSU still has 1 spot left in the 2022 class (15 croots, 16 transfers already)
  • Let's say 1 of the 4 transfers out comes back
  • That would put LSU at 78 scholarship players, plus that 1 spot still left
  • You figure that there will be some more attrition (transfers, ineligibles, etc)
  • Prime candidates: couple OL, couple DL, maybe RB down on depth chart
  • Let's say they lose 2 more players by the end of fall camp
  • Final total should be about 76 or so players on scholarship in 2022 (77 + 1 - 2)
  • Bottom Line: LSU will have basically a full roster again BUT will likely still need to target TE/OL in the portal since LSU may be thin at those spots.

2023 will be a whole 'nother can of worms given amount of transfers in this class. May even do a separate post for that.

Happy to hear feedback, questions, guys I missed, etc.

    As always: Geaux Tigers
