Tigers Roll in SEC Opener Against Missouri

A ho hum 20-point win

Now that the calendar has flipped to January, conference play is here and it’s time for the defending champion Tigers (14-1, 1-0) to ratchet up the intensity.

#7 LSU got SEC play started off with a bang, beating Missouri 92-72 Thursday night inside the PMAC.

Four Tigers scored double-digit points, and of those four three scored at least 20. Aneesah Morrow led the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds, Flau’jae Johnson was right behind her with 24 points, and Angel Reese had 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Missouri and LSU were in a close battle through a quarter, with LSU clinging to a 20-19 lead. LSU started to build some distance in the second quarter, before leaving Mizzou completely in the dust in the third quarter. LSU outscored the Other Tigers 32-17 in the third quarter.

Johnson had her best night of the 2023-24 season. Her 24 points was a season-high and she also added five rebounds, three steals, three assists, and a block.

“Flau’Jae is trying to be that all-around player who is trying to get rebounds and guarding the best player on the perimeter,” Kim Mulkey said.

Thursday was also a milestone night for Morrow, who grabbed her 1,000th career rebound. Morrow’s been LSU’s best player this season and has had a double-double in nine straight games.

“My biggest goal for tonight was to get my one-thousandth rebound,” Morrow said. “Going into the game I knew I had to defend. That was a big focus during practice as well. I focused on talking and getting through screens. I was super excited tonight.”

Up next, LSU will take its show on the road as the Tigers will take on Ole Miss Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
