The wind whips all over the place in Alex Box Stadium. It’s proximity to the Mississippi River and the constantly insanity of a Louisiana spring usually makes for a lot of help or hinderance on fly balls from Mother Nature. Today was the rare occasion that a strong, cold gale was blowing directly in from center field. It had the effect of making the high perch of the press box feel like a freezer and also destroyed any player’s hope of doing something spectacular with the long ball. The order of the day was to get ground balls through the infield defense and LSU did that in spectacular fashion, securing the weekend sweep against Wichita St with a 9-2 victory, and showing that they can still score plenty even when they’ve got a power outage.

It started off immediately with the new top of the order trio of Kramer Robertson, Cole Freeman, and Antoine Duplantis each slicing ground ball singles past the Wichita defense, with Twonnie’s grounder to right scoring two. The Tigers would bat around in the first with Chris Reid bringing in another run by grounding one of the foot of Shockers pitcher Zach Lewis, in a play similar to what doomed the Tigers last weekend in Houston.

The ground game continued to work as LSU scored 2 runs in the 3rd on a Jake Slaughter double and Reid forcing an E6 RBI, 2 runs in the 4th on a Duplantis 2RBI single to right, and 2 more in the 5th on a WP and another E6 triggered by Freeman. In these three innings, the Tigers used solid ground ball hits or patience at the plate to get men on, then cashed in the baserunners with more controlled hitting or forcing Wichita to make a costly mistake.

It’s a loooooooong way from here to Nebraska for this team, but in the modern era of Dead Ball Omaha, having an offense that can score without the high power dramatics is critical. Greg Deichmann, who’s been swinging his chartreuse stick like a house afire this season, broke his 11 game hitting streak today going 0-5 at the plate, and his absence in the scorebook was barely noticed.

Eric Walker is really starting to show the 3rd starter capability we were told he would have in the preseason, earning today’s win with a 6 inning outing, giving up just 3 hits and marking 3 Ks. He started kinda wobbly by giving up back-to-back 2 out walks in the 1st before a quick chat with pitching coach Alan Dunn settled him. Walker looked more like Poché than Lange today, letting his defense do most of the work behind him and daring batters to send some high cheese into the strong winds blowing straight in from center and watching it all die at the track.

The LSU bullpen has become the target of a lot of fans ire so far in this young season, and while I don’t think the problem is nearly as serious as some make it out to be, the bullpen certainly hasn’t been doing a lot to inspire confidence. As has happened twice already this weekend, LSU’s relief arms were gifted a shutout and failed to deliver.

Austin Bain stared the relief work in the 7th and immediately gave up back-to-back walks. He would come back to get 2 out, but was then swapped for Caleb Gilbert, who gave up a ground ball single up the middle that scored two. Gilbert would finish the inning with a quick K, have an uneventful 8th, and was then followed by Hunter Newman’s 2 K outing in the 9th.

The Tigers have another busy week ahead. Division 3 Louisiana College has once again been drafted in on short notice to fill the hole in the schedule left by last weeks rain-out against San Diego. That game is Tuesday, followed by the scheduled mid-week revenge bout with UNO on Wednesday, and then the SEC home opener series vs UGA next weekend.

LSU’s revamped offense explodes behind more zeros from Jared Poche’.

LSU (11-4) beat Wichita State (8-5) 12-5 on the back of yet another impressive performance from Jared Poche’ to take the series.

Poche’ extended his scoreless inning streak to an absurd 29 innings without a run to start off the season. Poche’ pitched 7 innings allowing only four hits while striking out three and walking none.

The hits that were recorded against Poche’ were spread out, with the biggest threat coming in the fourth when he allowed back to back singles with one out. He got out of the jam by inducing a flyout and recording a backwards K to end the inning.

“It looks like I gotta put up with that stupid mustache for another week,” joked LSU head coach Paul Mainieri after the game. Poche’s has not shaven his lip hair since the season began with his seven inning no hitter against Army.

“I thought maybe in the fourth inning he maybe didn’t have his normal stuff and I was thinking about hooking him after five innings and then in the fifth inning and the sixth inning was even better,” said Mainieri.

“Poche’s strange. You think he doesn’t have it today and then you look up and there’s five zeroes and he’s getting stronger as the game goes on.”

Offensively LSU took a while to get the ball rolling, but in the third they opened the scoring when Kramer Robertson singled to right. Kramer was advanced on a bunt single from Cole Freeman and then again to load the bases with Antoine Duplantis’ single to center. Robertson scored on a sac fly from Jake Slaughter and Freeman scored on a hard hit single from Zach Watson.

LSU held their 2-0 lead for the fourth inning, but in the fifth the floodgates opened up. Freeman lead off the inning reaching on an E5 and Greg Deichmann followed with a smash hit single and advanced on the throw to third. Slaughter scored Freeman with another single to right to move LSU’s lead to 3-0.

And then freshman Zach Watson surprised everybody in the ballpark when he hit his first home run of the year, a line drive that cleared the Left Field Landing to double LSU’s lead.

Watson had himself a day, going three for four with two singles and that three run jack. Everybody from the stands to the pressbox may have been surprised with Watson’s display of power, but he wasn’t.

“I was just going for an RBI,” said Watson. “He threw me two inside fastballs before and I said ‘well those are up, if he throws me one a little lower I’m gonna try to hit it over.’ He comes in with a fastball a little low and...”

Watson then trailed off and looked to where his long ball went.

“I did it. It felt great.”

The Tigers would continue to pile it on in the 6th. On the first pitch from new pitcher Tommy Barnhouse, Michael Papierski took him over the fence in right. Robertson followed that up with a double and Freeman knocked him in with a single. 8-0 LSU.

And then Greg Deichmann decided it was time to do Greg Deichmann things. This time he went opposite field for his dinger, so that’s a nice added wrinkle. Two more runs scored on his home run to make it 10-0.

LSU added the finishing touches to their lead in the seventh when Smith lead off with a single. Two straight flyouts followed, but a wild pitch moved him into position to score on Robertson’s single, his third of the game. Beau Jordan pinch hit for Duplantis and delivered with a single to right.

With a lead of 12-0 and Poche’ out of the game, the bullpen once again had a rough outing in the 9th inning. Travis Young led off the inning with an error and Jacob Katzfrey followed it with a single against Hunter Kiel. Kiel then issued three straight walks before being pulled for Collin Strall. Strall immediately let up a double and allowed a run to score on a 4-3 putout, but those five runs were the entirety of the Shockers comeback.

The Tigers will for a sweep Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast online via SEC Network +.

Lange and the LSU heavy hitters shined on a rain-soaked Friday night.

Following a two and half hour delay, LSU took game one of their series against Wichita State 6-1.

Given the team’s recent struggles and the fact that this weekend’s series is the last before conference play, LSU head baseball coach Paul Mainieri used the opportunity to tinker with the lineup, and the results were mixed. Spots one through four in the lineup, composed of Kramer Robertson, Cole Freeeman, Antoine Duplantis, and Greg Deichmann went eight for fifteen.

LSU opened the scoring when Robertson singled to lead off the bottom of the first and advanced on a wild pitch before being scored by a Duplantis double to right that got stuck under the tarp.

The Tigers doubled their run total in the third when Freeman doubled to the left corner of the field and was once again scored by Duplantis. Duplantis moved to second on the throw home and once in position he was scored by a laser single off the bat of Deichmann.

Back to back singles and an error put Freeman and Duplantis on again in the fifth inning. This time they both all score on one swing, a mammoth blast from Deichmann that once again, cleared the ballpark and put LSU up 6-0.

“My approach for that at-bat was actually to go the other way,” said Deichmann of his towering shot that cleared a tree beyond the Alex Box Stadium perimeter. “(Sean) Ochinko actually told me before I got to the dugout ‘I bet you can’t go oppo’ so I was actually thinking that way and it’s just one of those things where I reacted and used my power.”

Six runs is all LSU would put on the board, but it’s about four more than they absolutely needed tonight.

After a disappointing outing last week against #1 TCU, Alex Lange was back and in full command of his pitches, throwing four innings of perfect baseball to start the game. Lange would give up his perfect bid in the fifth inning, but wound up pitching eight innings of two hit baseball, allowing no runs and no walks while striking out nine.

“That’s the one thing about Alex Lange,” said Mainieri after the game. “His confidence doesn’t fluctuate depending on what he did on his outing before or the inning before. He’s just the consummate winner. He always has the feeling that he’s going to get it going and he’s going to make the big pitch. And tonight he was awesome.”

While the top part of the lineup came up big for LSU, the bottom was less effectual. No batter after the four spot recorded a hit, and Jordan Romero was the only batter to reach base, once on an error and once on a walk. The bottom part of the lineup was largely unchanged by Mainieiri’s tinkering, so we shouldn’t see too much shakeup there the rest of the weekend unless the funk continues tomorrow.

But what Mainieri did change came up big.

“I really did it only for one reason,” said Mainieri. “I just wanted Kramer to go up to bat first without having guys in scoring position. I don’t think he’s been pressing but they’ve been pitching him differently because he comes up in the first inning and there’s somebody on base right away.”

Sophomore outfielder Antoine Duplantis took well to the move, going three for four on the night with two RBIs. But he didn’t notice much of a change in the swap in both batting spot and position.

“The only thing different mentally I guess would be that I’m trying to drive guys in instead of getting on base and moving guys over,” said Duplantis. “But other than that I go up there with the same approach that I always do.”

Game two of the series has been moved to 1 p.m. to avoid the same inclement weather that pushed game one back two and half hours. The game will be broadcast online on the SEC Network +.

Yup. We’re playing wheat.

LSU is turning back the clock and is going to do the thing which this program was founded upon: beating Wichita St. If you’re not up on your history, then feast your eyes on this early 90s goodness:

Wichita St.

Record: 8-3

RS/RA: 61/48

ISR/RPI: 24/24

It’s still early and the computer rankings are pretty screwy (LSU is 35th in the ISR), but the Shockers are off to a pretty solid start to their season. Sure, they got swept by Louisiana Tech, and we’d hate to get shown up by an in-state school, but they also took a midweek game from Oklahoma a few days ago. They are also 1-3 away from home, which is a pretty good sign for the Tigers, as Alex Box is not a great place for a team that struggles on the road.

Mascot: WuShock

Back in 1904, the team needed a name for its football team, so the coach panicked and called the team the Wheatshockers because a lot of his players held that job in the offseason. Somehow, the name stuck, and the school used a shock of wheat as its mascot until 1948, when someone got the horrifying idea to design an anthropomorphic version of wheat shocks which, and I’m going to quote the school here, “gave a tough impression, with a serious, no-nonsense scowl." You do you, Wu.

The mascot, of course, has gone through some redesigns over the years, but the general design has remained the same. WuShock got a more amped up, meaner look in 1998 because apparently someone was drinking too much Mountain Dew. In 2006, they redesigned the mascot again because, and I am not making this up, the top-heavy design of the costume endangered the human inside the costume. WuShock is literally the reason I have this segment this season because it is the most ridiculous mascot in college athletics that refuses to embrace how ridiculous it is. Go the Big Red route, y’all.

About the School

USNWR Ranking: Rank Not Published

Most Popular Major: Business

You’d think a school with a shock of wheat as its mascot would be an agricultural school, but business is by far the most popular major. There’s a pretty good engineering school there which is also popular among students, but you’re more likely to learn how to balance the books than how to use a turbine. Which, frankly, is sort of disappointing to find out. The national rank isn’t published which isn’t a great sign for its reputation, but nearly fifty percent of its classes have under 20 students, so it does sound like a pretty good place to go to school and not be lost in the shuffle.

About the Team

The Offense

I’m not really sure how they are scoring 6 runs per game. The team hits 267/368/370 and only has 5 home runs on the season. They’ve stolen 10 bases on 13 attempts which shows some speed, but not a scary amount. Also, the steals are pretty well-distributed up and down the order. 3B Alec Bohm is the scariest hitter in the order, hitting 2 homers to go with his 304/393/548 line. 1B/OF Greyson Jenista is the only other hitter in the Shockers order in the same ballpark, hitting 341/408/455. They did struggle to score against better opposition in general, but they did explode for 10 runs on getaway day against La Tech. There is potential there, but they should struggle to score runs.

The Defense

There is a damn solid rotation backed up by a nearly impenetrable bullpen. The Shockers will match the Tigers in a righty-lefty-righty rotation. Willie Schwanke is the Friday starter, and he’s got a 2.08 ERA but just a 9/8 K/BB ratio. Cody Tyler has the unfortunate task of going up against Poche’, but despite his 3.86 ERA, I’d argue he’s the Shockers best pitcher on paper. That 14/5 K/BB ratio is for real, and his higher ERA is mainly due to imploding against La Tech last week. We can only hope for a repeat performance, as he failed to get out of the first inning. The defense turns batted balls in play into outs at a good rate, only allowing a .283 average on balls in play. There shouldn’t be a lot of freebies for LSU this weekend.

Tiger Bait?

After a rough weekend in Houston and a midweek loss, fans are feeling pretty down right now. Mainieri is going to juggle the lineup a bit to try and create a spark. Honestly, don’t panic. If LSU gets a timely hit in the 9th against Texas Tech, LSU takes the weekend and… who cares about midweek games anyway? Besides, beating Wichita St is what this program was founded on. It’s time to get back on the horse and get over the hangover. The Shockers are just what the doctored ordered, a good team that LSU should still take the series from.
